Sender SMS ID Registry
Communications Alliance (CA) welcomes the Federal Government announcement of a Budget commitment to fund the development and operation of an Australian Sender SMS ID registry, as a means of combatting SMS-based scams and fraud.
There are complexities as to how such a registry should be introduced and operated, so it is crucial that the relevant regulator, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), engages further with industry and other stakeholders, to ensure that the resulting framework is effective and practicable.
We are pleased that Government has recognised the need for the registry to be introduced in a phased way, that enables the development of new business processes and systems.
Many CA members would prefer that the registry ultimately operate under a mandatory, rather than voluntary, framework.
“Telcos are already pursuing and blocking scam-SMS under the enforceable industry code developed by Comms Alliance members,” commented Communications Alliance CEO, John Stanton
“A Sender SMS ID registry – if executed well – can be a valuable addition to the armoury available to combat the increasingly sophisticated scourge of scam SMS.”
