A Choice of Alternate Pathways

Standards Australia has recently consulted on proposed changes to their procedures in developing Australian Standards, which includes the adoption of international Standards. These new processes and alternative pathways are being proposed to introduce flexibility in engaging stakeholders, entry into new areas of standardisation, allowing cross-sectorial standardisation activities and the introduction of new types of Australian Standard products.

Communications Alliance has provided a submission supporting Standards Australia’s initiatives to explore potential mechanisms to improve standardisation processes but recommends a precautionary approach - maintaining the goodwill and branding of Australian Standards but importantly, not to undermine the existing, internationally recognised, standardisation development models. Underpinned by the tried-and-true standardisation principles of openness, transparency and inclusiveness, together with the appropriate oversight of relevant and independent governance structures, explorations into new standardisation approaches should not be discouraged.
