Comms Alliance new CEO commenced

Communications Alliance is very pleased to welcome its new CEO, John Stanton, who commenced in the role today.  John brings over 18 years communications industry experience to the role, most recently as CEO of People Telecom.  He has also held leadership positions with Intelsat, Telstra and OTC in Australia, the United States and United Kingdom.

Anne Hurley who has led Communications Alliance with distinction for the past six years will step down on 30 April.


ACMA Mobile Premium Services Do Not Bill/ Do Not Contract Consultation

Communications Alliance has provided a submission on the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s Mobile Premium Services Do Not Bill / Do Not Contract Determination Consultation Paper. The consultation paper seeks industry’s feedback on how the ACMA might implement a means by which mobile carriage service providers would be instructed to restrict access to billing for premium SMS/MMS services which were determined by the regulator to be in violation of obligations as stipulated in the Mobile Premium Services Code C637:2009; and proposed rules for implementing contracting requirements relating to the Mobile Premium Services Industry Register.

ACCC New Unfair Contract Terms Law – Draft Guidance for Consultation

Communications Alliance has provided a submission to the ACCC on the consultation draft of Australian Consumer Law:  a guide to unfair contract terms. On 17 March 2010 the Trade Practices Amendment (Australian Consumer Law) Act (No.1) was passed as law. Under these laws there are provisions regulating unfair contract terms (UCT).

To assist businesses, legal practitioners, consumers and industry organisations understand the new unfair contract terms laws, national guidance has been developed. The draft provides information on the types of contracts and contract terms which may be affected by these new laws.

NBN Project Update

The Operational working group will meet this week.

Interested members are invited to register for the project team, which will also provide full access to the NBN Wiki.  Non-member organisations who have an interest in the NBN and meet the eligibility requirements for Communications Alliance membership can register as observers directly on the NBN Wiki.

Nominations now open for the 2010 ACOMMS Awards

Nominations have opened for the Australian communications industry’s premier awards, the ACOMMS, with eight categories reflecting the development, innovation and service focus that underpin the sector.

The ACOMM Awards are presented by Communications Alliance and Communications Day and recognise excellence delivered to consumers, business users and the industry by individuals, service providers, content providers, carriers, technology partners, consultants and third party suppliers.

The ACOMMS will this year be awarded to companies which have excelled in innovation (large and SME categories); professional services; customer service; partnerships for growth; innovation in content delivery and services; and environmental responsibility.  The awards will also recognise a Communications Ambassador, an outstanding individual who has shown strong leadership and made a significant and visible contribution to the Australian communications industry.
