The Australian Consumer Law passed
On 17 March 2010, the Senate passed the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), a single law which replaces 17 Commonwealth, State and Territory acts in one go. In the biggest reform of consumer protection laws since the passage of the Trade Practices Act by the Whitlam Government in 1974, the new Australian Consumer Law provides fines of up to $1.1 million for companies that engage in unconscionable conduct or make false or misleading representations. The States and Territories will each adopt the ACL as their own law. It will be implemented by the end of this year.
Communications Alliance, in conjunction with Baker &McKenzie, will be holding a seminar on Tuesday 11th May 2010 examining the impact on the industry on the introduction of the new law. More details to follow. Ministers Media Release
